Nice post Steve!
I've found that too often in life, when you try to appease everybody, you wind up pleasing nobody! It's best to get input from all parties involved, and to try and think about different perspectives that might not come naturally to you. In the end, you can't usually find a solution that meets everybody's criterion, but you can find one that most think is fair.

When Bill Cosby, the comedian, was asked the secret to success, he said, "I don't know the secret to success but the secret to failure is trying to please everybody."

Indeed, the best one can do is sit down, make sure everyone puts a stake in the ground regarding wants and needs, and arrive at a solution that at least meets everyone's minimum requirements. Ask the direct question, "Is this as fair and just a solution as we can find?" Then, ask everyone to respond out loud so no one can say later that they weren't on board. (Well, they can say it but everyone else will know that they agreed in the room).
